How has the Invention and Evolution of Cars Impacted the Environment?
The invention and evolution of cars have impacted the environment very much. Since Karl Benz invented the first car in 1886, the fuel efficiency was very bad and the cars took up a lot of gasoline. Cars have become more popular since then. More people started to buy cars and use them in their daily lives.
Throughout the years of the car’s evolution, cars have evolved a lot. When the first car was made, there was barely to any safety. Now, there are seatbelts, airbags, automatic braking systems, sensors, blind spot warning, etc. Safety has majorly changed throughout the years. The environment has also been greatly affected by the car. Lots of plants have animals have been killed due to roadkills/being crushed, pollution, etc. Lots of habitats used by animals have also been destroyed for the construction of roads and the construction of cars. In the past, there were last plants and animals killed due to lack of cars. Pollution has been a major problem since the invention of cars. Even before cars are being driven, the process of collecting, manufacturing and shipping car causes lots of pollution. When cars are in use, a lot of pollution is being made and creates lots of greenhouse gases. When a car is thrown away, parts of the car like the battery, and the plastics are toxic and extremely harmful to the environment. Fortunately, National Geographic says that ¾ of today’s cars are being recycled instead of thrown away. In the past, there were fewer cars so there were fewer junkyard car pileups. Cars have also become more fuel-efficient, meaning that cars have to consume less gas to travel farther. Cars have evolved a lot throughout the years.
Fossil Fuels cause greenhouse gases, which prevent sunlight from getting out of Earth’s Atmosphere. This can lead to climate change or global warming. Cars use fossil fuels. When the car burns gas or diesel, they get turned into Carbon Dioxide and other harmful gases. This causes the Greenhouse Effect, which heats up Earth. This causes habitat loss and rise in sea levels. Fossil Fuels can majorly affect the environment.
Cars affect floral and plants in a lot of ways. Cars provide Carbon Dioxide to floral for them the ‘breathe’. Cars also affect floral negatively by crushing them. Cars affect animals by heating up the Earth, endangering certain species, and eliminating habitats. Cars sometimes run over animals, causing roadkills. Cars can affect floral and plants negatively and positively.
Mankind has put in effort to minimize pollution made by cars. Car manufactures are making more fuel-efficient cars. Car manufactures are also making hybrid and electric cars, like the Toyota Prius and the Tesla Model S. People are also trying to reduce the amount of pollution they create by car-pooling, walking, biking, jogging and running instead of driving by themselves. More and more cars are being recycled than being thrown away. Certain cities are also trying to reduce the amount of pollution that they create. Since China is a very polluted country, certain provinces and cities have taken up the initiative to slow down pollution. In Changsha, China, there are free bike rentals all over the cities of Changsha. This promotes the use of bikes to prevent more pollution. Mankind have put in a lot of effort to minimize pollution made by cars and are still continuing to minimize pollution made by cars.
The invention and evolution of cars have impacted the environment in lots of ways. The car’s evolution, consumption of fossil fuels, cars effect on floral and plants, and mankind’s effort to minimize pollution made by cars have changed the environments a lot.
